Hi Explorussians,

I was at Liden & Denz Language Institute in St. Petersburg the other day answering your comments on YouTube.

Fatih left the following comment: “In Russia they say O великий, могучий, правдивый и свободный русский язык!”

I hadn’t heard that phrase before, I looked it up and found that it is from a popular prose poem by Ivan Turgenev, “The Russian Language”.

Nadya was going back and forth along the corridor on that day, so I invited her to explain the phrase for me.

I loved the way she interpreted the phrase and I’m sure you’ll love it too!

Enjoy!

The Russian Language by Turgenev – The Transcript

Надя, привет.
Hi Nadya.

Привет.
Hi.

Что ты будешь нам читать?
What are you going to read us?

Я прочитаю очень известную цитату из Тургенева.
I will read a very famous quote by Turgenev.

Это слова о русском языке,
These words are about the Russian language

которые русские дети узнают в первый день в школе.
and Russian children learn them on their first day at school.

Эта фраза, которой начинается
With this phrase starts

первый урок русского языка и литературы.
the first class of the Russian language and literature.

Учитель пишет её на доске.
The teacher writes it on the blackboard.

И если честно, я даже не знала, кто это сказал.
To be honest, I didn’t even know who said this phrase.

Но я знала эту фразу.
But I knew this phrase.

Во дни сомнений, во дни тягостных раздумий
In days of doubt, in days of distressing meditations

о судьбах моей родины,
on the fate of my country,

ты один мне поддержка и опора,
in you alone I trust,

о великий, могучий, правдивый и свободный русский язык!
O Russian language, great, mighty, truthful, free!

Не будь тебя — как не впасть в отчаяние при виде всего,
But for you, how not fall into despair, seeing all

что совершается дома?
that is done at home?

Но нельзя верить,
But it is impossible to believe

чтобы такой язык не был дан великому народу!
that such a language was not given to a great people.

Ok.

Хорошо. Тогда давай обсудим эту фразу.
Good. Let’s then discuss this phrase.

Главное: великий, могучий, правдивый и свободный
The most important is “great, mighty, truthful and free

русский язык
Russian language.”

Конечно, как любую цитату, каждый человек может
Of course, as any other quote, any person can

понять это, как он понимает.
understand this differently.

Я расскажу, как понимаю я.
I will tell you as I understand it myself.

Великий язык. Это о том, что язык, русский язык особенно,
The great language. It means that a language, the Russian language in particular,

он является контекстом.
is сontext.

Не только языковым, но и историческим.
Not only linguistic context, but also historical context.

Этот язык видел войны.
This language saw wars.

Этот язык видел крещение Руси.
This language saw the Baptism of Rus’.

Этот язык видел героизм народа.
This language saw the heroism of our nation.

Этот язык видел самое страшное время,
This language saw the most dreadful times

которое было в нашей стране.
of our country.

И этот язык радовался вместе с народом,
And this language rejoiced with the people
когда что-то хорошее происходило,
when something good happened,

когда мы побеждали,
when we gained victories,

когда мы были вместе,
when we were united,

когда в стране случалось что-то – большое счастье.
when there was a great happiness in the country.

Этот язык был свидетелем и участником этих событий.
This language witnessed these events and took part in them.

Очень многие слова появились в нашем языке во время войн.
Many words of our language appeared during wars.

Я не скажу, что была одна война.
I’m not telling there was only one war.

Во время разных войн появлялись новые слова.
During different wars new words appeared.

Во время всеобщей радости появлялись другие слова.
In the times when everyone was happy, other words appeared.

Когда народ празднует, появляются ещё слова.
When the people celebrate something, more words appear.

И этот процесс продолжается.
And this process continues.

Я думаю, что великий – потому что
I think it is great, because

язык – это не просто слова, которыми мы общаемся,
the language is not only the words we use to speak,

а это огромный контекст, это наша память.
but also a vast context, our memory.

Это то, что с нами всегда.
It is something that always remains with us.

И мы не забываем об этом никогда.
And we never forget about it.

Язык отражает всё, что мы думаем и чувствуем.
The language reflects everything we think and feel.

Могучий.
Mighty.

Могучий – это мощный или сильный.
Mighty means powerful or strong.

Это та сила эмоций, которую мы можем выразить языком.
This is the power of emotions which we can express with our language.

Наш язык может заставить вас думать по-другому.
Our language can make you change the way you think.

Когда мы говорим по-русски
When we speak in Russian

наши слова звучат очень серьёзно.
our words sound very serious.

Они звучат очень красиво, серьёзно, и они действительно…
They sound very beautiful and serious, and they do indeed…

Язык имеет силу.
The language has power.

Язык меняет жизнь.
The language changes lives.

Правдивый.
Truthful.

Слово “правда”.
The word “truth”.

Правдивый язык. Язык, на котором мы говорим правду.
The truthful language. The language in which we speak the truth.

Почему?
Why?

Потому что у нас есть слова, чтобы сказать правду.
Because we have the words to speak the truth.

Русский язык – очень богатый.
The Russian language is very rich.

У нас много слов. У нас огромное количество синонимов.
We have a lot of words. We have a large number of synonyms.

И это большая проблема для тех, кто изучает русский язык.
And this is a big problem for those who study Russian.

Но для тех, кто владеет языком, – это огромное достоинство.
But for those who speak this language it is a huge advantage.

Если я хочу сказать что-то, я всегда найду слово,
If I want to say something, I will always find the word

которое будет точное, правдивое и нужное мне в этот момент.
which will be precise, truthful and timely.

Любое слово в русском языке имеет оттенок.
Any word in Russian has its flavor.

Я могу сказать одно и то же слово
I can say the same word

с оттенком негативным, с оттенком позитивным,
with a negative flavor, with a positive flavor,

с оттенком нейтральным
with a neutral flavor

или с оттенком величия и возвышения.
or with a flavor of greatness and exaltation.

И это помогает нам быть правдивыми.
And this helps us to be truthful.

Когда мы что-то говорим…
When we say something…

На русском языке хорошо говорить правду.
The Russian language is good for telling the truth.

Врать тоже можно, но говорить правду удобно.
It’s possible to lie too, but to speak the truth is comfortable.

Свободный русский язык.
The free Russian language.

Свободный, как люди.
As free as the people.

Каждый человек выбирает для себя модель языка,
Every person chooses a language model

на котором он говорит.
for him to speak.

Это не совсем диалект.
I don’t mean a dialect.

И это не совсем классовые различия в языке.
And I don’t mean language differences across social classes either.

Но каждый русский человек, который владеет языком,
But every Russian person who speaks this language,

он может выбрать, на каком языке ему говорить сегодня.
can choose in what language he will speak today.

И очень часто люди разговаривают на разных языках
And very often people speak different languages

в разных ситуациях.
in different situations.

Но это русский язык.
But it’s still the Russian language.

Он даёт нам свободу быть самими собой,
It gives us the freedom to be ourselves

и свободу быть понятыми.
and the freedom to be understood.

Мы можем рассчитывать, что с помощью языка
We can be sure that with the help of the language

я могу добиться того, что меня поймёт
I can make myself clear

очень простой человек, без образования.
to common people without education.

И также меня поймёт профессор,
As well as to a professor,

и также меня поймёт человек, который любит математику,
to a person who loves Mathematics,

и также меня поймёт человек, который любит животных.
to a person who loves animals.

Я всегда могу найти тот язык, на котором, я знаю, меня поймут.
I always can find the language to make others understand me.
