If I told you that I learned the Russian cases only through one film, it wouldn’t be a lie.

One film became my Russian teacher, my Russian textbook.

It introduced me to such beautiful songs – I remember I didn’t mind struggling for hours with complex chords so I could play them on my guitar.

This film made me come closer to the Russian people and appreciate their culture.

It made me want to explore Russian poetry.

What a film!

A drama, a comedy, a musical, a documentary, all in one, and in perfect harmony.

No surprise Russians watch it every year on December 31.

It’s probably the most famous Russian film.

I’m talking about The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath! – Ирония судьбы, или С лёгким паром!

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched this film.

The first time, I watched it in one go with English subtitles. Three hours. I knew very basic Russian back then.

The second time, I wouldn’t be able to watch it in one go. I watched it with both English and Russian subtitles using my system.

I would stop after almost every phrase to write down unknown stuff.

Grammar, vocabulary, syntax… Lots of Googling. Lots of Yandexing.

Genitive Case - Learn Russian Cases through the Irony of Fate

It took me endless hours. It was not the easiest thing.

I was thinking to myself: “Maybe you shouldn’t be learning Russian like that”.

It’s like throwing someone who doesn’t swim in the middle of the ocean.

But it was definitely worth the effort as I quickly managed to get a good idea of the language mechanics.

Struggling over complex structures made simpler sentences look like a piece of cake after a while.

What kept me going in this unorthodox way of studying Russian?

First, an awesome plot, even almost the entire duration of the movie is spent in the same apartment!

Second, the unrealistically wonderful music. Even in good films you normally get one, maybe two good songs whereas the rest passes unnoticed. That’s not the case here. All the songs in this film became great hits. The lyrics are pure poetry. The music? I told you I didn’t mind suffering on the guitar just to play half a verse.

Third, the wisdom, the life lessons you take away from this film. For example:

  • The art of enjoying every moment of our lives with all its unexpected events that initially may look dreadful. These events give colour to our lives and leave sweet memories to think about and remember in the future.
  • The importance of having true friends who can even become a priority over … your fiancée!
  • The attitude we should have towards taking hard but honest decisions.
  • The importance of sharing something with others either that is just an onion with our neighbour or a meal with an unknown man that burst into our apartment!
  • The joy in simple things such as meeting with your friends, playing the guitar, and sharing a song with them.

I could go on talking about the film forever but let me tell you how you can benefit from this course.
